Stretch.
After.
Every.
Run.
For real! I've become pretty manic about stretching after my runs, and every morning out of the hot shower I do 20 minutes of stretching. I thiiiink it helps.. It must.

I just dealt with a mild case of Achilles Tendonitis (or Tendonosis, depending on whom you ask) and found it to be the same: had I simply stretched. Two weeks of total rest plus two more of calf exercises and frequent stretching and I'm back in the game - albeit with lingering mild soreness during runs.

Luckily, I'm on lazy mode until June so I should be able to recover :)

Thanks for stopping by, Mike! I appreciate the explanation on the plastic - good point on the recycling, but still tough to pinch to avoid spilling. Better water down my shirt than Gatorade, though! ;-) Definitely had a good time and will certainly be returning the next time a trip to New Hampshire can be made to hit race weekend. Best of luck with this year's event! Several friends are registered and eagerly looking forward to it.

Hi Great Comments, by the way we choose plastic cups because we can recycle 100% of them. The plastic coated paper ones actually were not acceptable for recycling.. Enjoy and hope to see you back..

Yay for the Year of the Dragon! I like a "quality vs. quantity" approach too. NYC will be quite an experience, as will be Team Mas o Menos. Really hoping the Napa Ragnar team works out! Somehow I think it will. :)

I have heard good things about "Racing Weight," but am already backlogged three running books thick, plus another four or five non-running books. Once I can see my nightstand again, it's on the list right after Haruki Murakami's "What I Talk About...". ;-)

The problem with the "not racing/training" mindset is that I don't really have a non-racing season unless I'm living somewhere with no races, but even then I'm training for something. That end-of-year weight was put on during "marathon season" when I ran Layton, Mesquite, Valley of Fire, and Las Vegas. But I think my marathon "race weight" and 5k "race weight" are about eight pounds apart. I just need to play around and figure out exactly what the right balance of energy stores and leanness is.

You ran like a zillion miles in 2011!
Racing Weight is a great, great book if you haven't read it already. It does say that when you're not racing/training that it's okay/likely to gain some weight back.
Blog about something other than training.. WHAT? Crazy talk.

wow that's a lot of random. The crazy guy, I saw one on Christmas Eve doing he same thing.. He had a bike in his hands and he was swinging it around and yelling things. I really felt bad, I wonder where his family is.
That's pretty cool you got a deal on the AZ RnR.
And even better that you got some new reading material.

Happy holidays, Chad! There's a link to the recipe I used, from smittenkitchen.com, in the post above; Deb uses white potatoes and onions, but I used red and shallots. The high temp oil is definitely key to getting them perfect, but my wife was quite impressed with my slow-cook version. ;-) We should start a "training with Jack" reading club or something. Maybe call him up and see what he thinks of a potato and scotch diet?

I'm going to have to try some latkas; you should post the recipe. We're all about the potato pancakes in Big Lake, Minnesota, my home town - though I've only made them for my boys once. I'll eat anything involving potatos and shallots/onions. :) Meghan also bought me Daniels' book, so I'm a bit psyched about it right now. Glad you enjoyed your holiday season!

Steena; I'd give them a year to see if they heed the feedback from this year. If things go the wrong direction, Ryno Running does a 5k on the strip in May, which is most of "the good bits." Alternately, we could just organize a random runner invasion of Vegas and have a crowd-dodging race.

John; it was indeed crazy, but if you're hooked for life, it's only going to get more addicting. ;-)

Thanks Karen! No worries at all on the "lane sharing" - I don't mean to come off as picking on the halfers; the cones were hard to notice and there wasn't a whole lot of room. They timed the half start so the full elites would have the strip to themselves (until the half elites caught them ;-)) but the rest of us had to share for safety's sake; PR attempt or not. Congrats on your finish and best of luck with the Tinkerbell training!

Awesome recap. Love your pictures. So glad it was a good experience for you. I am sorry to say that I was one of the half marathoners that ran in the full lane until I realized what that lane was for. I quickly moved out over to the far right so that the speedy gonzales marathoners could get their PR's!
Congrats!
